Induction of Wayne Arthurs MPP

Honourary Member of Rotary Club of Pickering

March 21, 2006

Wayne Arthurs, you have been chosen by the members of the Rotary Club of Pickering to become an honourary member.

No one is eligible to become a Rotarian unless they endeavor to practise the principles of goodwill and service. The members of this club have invited you to join them because they believe you are already motivated by these principles. We believe you manifest those qualities of head and heart which represent in your public, business, social and private life, the true spirit of Rotary and are willing to do your share in translating these ideals into tangible realities.

Over many years, you have walked side-by-side with Rotary as we go about the business of serving our community. Through an extended period you supported our efforts to identify a tract of waterfront land as Rotary Frenchman’s Bay West Park. Following the tragic death of a young woman in our city, you supported our efforts to establish a permanent shelter for abused women and children now known as Herizon House. While you were mayor and cuurently as MPP, you’ve been a patron of the Pickering Rotary Music Festival which is now in its 19th year and we appreciate the personal interest and support you’ve shown. When the Durham West Arts Centre was formed a little over 3 years ago you showed initiative through leadership of its founding board.

Rotary is an international organization of business and professional people with 1.2 million members in 35,000 clubs.

I wish to impress upon you that you are being admitted not only to the Rotary Club of Pickering, but to a worldwide association; and by virtue of your membership in this club, you will be welcomed into the fellowship of any Rotary club in the world.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basic worthy enterprise and in particular, to encourage and foster:

1.      The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

2.      High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to service society;

3.      The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business and community life;

4.      The advancement of the ideals of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotarians judge themselves by the Four-Way Test of the things we think, say, or do:

1.      Is it the Truth?

2.      Is it fair to all concerned?

3.      Wiill it build goodwill and better friendship?

4.      Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

It is my privilege and honour to induct you as an honourary member of the Rotary Club of Pickering. I also have the pleasure in pinning on the emblem of our worldwide association. Welcome to Rotary. Wear it always and with pride.

I also present you with this package of Rotary literature and especially these copies of the Object of Rotary and The Four-Way Test.

May you be stimulated by the friendship you find in us, and may we in turn know you to be an added source of strength to our club. With this hope we most heartily offer you the right hand of Rotary fellowship.

Always remember Rotary’s mottos: “Service Above Self” and “He Profits Most Who Serves Best.”
